Dilruwan Shanaka, Master Student in Astrophysics

Dilruwan Shanaka studies violent cosmos during his Master 2 internship at the Institut de Planétologie et d’Astrophysique de Grenoble (IPAG, CNRS).

Here is his testimony as an international student in France.

Throughout human history, there have always been remarkable explorers. People are typically inquisitive and want to know the how and why behind what we observe. So humans end up exploring and gathering information, and what better quest than delving into the depths of the Universe? That is where the unknowns, the 'truth', the ultimate frontier lies.  Astronomy  and astrophysics is the  science that seeks to explain everything that we observe in the Universe.

My name is Dilruwan shanaka. I study about violent Cosmos. Currently, I am working for my Master 2 internship at the Institut de Planétologie et d’Astrophysique de Grenoble (IPAG, CNRS) and I am  studying  X-ray properties of an intriguing  source in our own Galaxy.  I have been in France for two years now. Back in 2019, I was awarded the prestigious QMaster fellowship from French National Research Agency through the program ”Investment for future” to study Physics and Astrophysics from  University of Strasbourg . Science in France has a secure place in the classical canon of the history of science. Dated back in 1666 to the Académie des Sciences, founded by Louis XIV and Jean-Baptiste Colbert, since then achievements in science in France have been significant through all areas.

I was also fortunate enough to be exposed to such cutting edge Research in Astrophysics during my stay in Strasbourg and Grenoble.

Having lived in two french regions, Grand Est and  Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, my spare time was filled with visits around France, Germany and especially the Grenoble french Alps . I've been passionate about digital art in my whole life. I love street/nature photography, cinematography, and writing .

When it comes to art, not surprisingly, France is thus an ideal place for myself.

Its churches and palaces, châteaux and fortresses, museums and galleries are  a treasure trove waiting to be explored in future.

Finally, my long term goal is to become an Educator to bring Astronomy and Science enrichment opportunities to youth in remote, underserved towns and villages in Sri Lanka.
