Malithi Weerasekara, Master student in Environmental Hazards and Risks Management

Malithi Weerasekara is a Master student in Environmental Hazards and Risks Management at the Université Côte d'Azur.

Here is her testimony as an international student in France.

I am Malithi Weerasekara doing the first year of M.Sc in Environmental hazards and risks Management in Mediterranean Institute of Risk, Environment and Sustainable Development (IMREDD), at the Université Côte d'Azur.

Understanding the environment and its risks, prediction and solution implementation has been a challenging topic. The complexity of environmental scenarios can be simplified and robust prediction platforms can be implemented using different modeling techniques. Remote sensing (RS) and Artificial intelligence (AI) have emerged into the Environmental platform with a collaborative sense with modeling. These techniques are efficient and proved to be the most accurate for the understanding of the environment and its hazards, risks, change detection, and prediction of future scenarios.

The opportunity for higher education in France with the help of the IDEX Excellence Scholarship helped me to enter this intense, broad and contemporary field of science.

The environmental field is inevitably multidisciplinary. University’s transdisciplinary approach for the hazards and risks management and wonderfully calibrated knowledge to meet the expectations of the future is the strength for my future interests. Addressing the pressing environmental issues such as global warming, climate change, Biodiversity depletion with ultra future-facing technologies is the strongest aspect of the program that I have been studying. Modern techniques such as RS, AI and modeling are my strengths which I have been using for small-scale projects. Implementation of these techniques to find the solutions for intense land cover change and its consequences and ultimately finding its direct and indirect effect on climate change and finding solutions is my ultimate motive within this area of study. I am currently doing an internship under the Head of the Geo spatial Monitoring & Information Technology (GeoSMIT) department and collaborated for the SEDRIC project Sri Lanka and work on the High-resolution satellite imagery and land cover changes.

Working with the eye of the earth and trying to make the world a better place for the future generation will be started from my mother country Sri Lanka and my horizons will be expanded every day with the advancement of knowledge.

I am privileged to be a part of the University of Côte d'Azur that is located in one of the most beautiful cities in French Riviera with glamorous beaches and mountains with a warm, friendly and welcoming neighborhood. According to a motto of the university of Côte d'Azur “Best way to predict the future is to create it”. A safe future with a protected environment can be created with the help of outstanding and impeccably crafted knowledge and ideas that has been given by the University of Côte d'Azur.

This is one of the best places to implement skills by bridging the knowledge and be an excellent practitioner to write a future and make the world a safe place.
